Netflix Tests Mobile-Only Subscription Plan For India

India’s popular online streaming platform Netflix is testing mobile only subscription for India. As per reports confirmed by Netflix, monthly mobile-only plan will cost Rs 250 for subscribers. Currently Netflix entry level plan starts from Rs 500 per month. So, they have reduced the cost of plan to almost half for mobile-only subscribers.

Subscribers with mobile-only plan will have access to (SD) Standard Definition content on single screen or tablet at a time. Video quality in mobile-only plan will be SD and they won’t be having access to HD.

Netflix has reduced the starting price of their subscription to Rs 250 for only mobile so that users can avail this benefit and stream their content in SD on mobile. As per Netflix, users can compare the subscription price of Rs 250 to a movie ticket or to the price they pay for their monthly cable. This plan is targeting the cell phone users and Netflix is trying to expand its user base in India.

If we see Netflix is still the most expensive OTT among Hotstar, Amazon Prime, ZEE5 and ALTBalaji. Hotstar offers full access to their premium services at Rs 365 per year (Rs 30.41 monthly / Rs 1 per day) which is cheaper than Netflix’s mobile-only plan which goes to Rs 3000 per year (Rs 250 monthly / Rs 8.3 per day). On other hand Amazon Prime offers their subscription plan for Rs 1000 per year (Rs 83.33 monthly / Rs 2.7 per day), again Amazon Prime is also cheaper than Netflix. ZEE5 is available at yearly price of 1188 (Rs 99 monthly / Rs 3.3 per day) and Ekta Kapoor’s ALTBalaji offers subscription plan at Rs 100 for 3 months for premium content access (Rs 1.09 per day). Netflix has to face tough completion from these local OTT.
